Top Icelandic salmon river in new hands

At the end of the 2008 season the Midfjardara river located in northwest Iceland will be changing hands. The new owner, Rafn (Rabbi) Alfredsson has taken over the lease and is full filling a dream of owning and operating one of Iceland top ten rivers.

Midfjardara river and its blue-clear waters

Midfjardara is located some 220 km from Reykjavik and has rightly earned its reputation as one of the top rivers in Iceland with a three-year average of 1690 fish for the season. This vast river system covers 790 sq km and apart from the main stream there are three tributaries, Nupsa, Austura and Vestura that combine to provide over 200 named pools. With only ten rods allowed on the river you may easily think that you have the river to yourself!

With so much water there is something to suit everyone and all abilities and what better to look down on a pool and see your quarry through gin clear water. Two rods are looked after by one guide and transported to each session by four-wheeled vehicle. Most of the fishing is easily accessible although the canyon on Austura requires you to hike but the effort is well worth it for the scenery alone.

The river receives a fine grilse run throughout the summer months but also sees multi sea wintered fish running earlier in the season. Rabbi intends to protect and enhance these runs by implementing a fly only rule which is unusual in Iceland.

Away from the river Laxahvammur Lodge has ten twin rooms with ensuite facilities that will be refurbished for the 2009 season. Rabbi’s intention is to ensure that everything that is within his control is done to the very highest standards. The fishing, well, he admits that this is in the hands of nature, but if you are wanting a classic Iceland fishing experience then this is one of those rivers to visit.
